Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a kiln?

No. We chose air-dry clay so that everyone could create.

  • Can I fire at a local kiln?

Yes. Our clay can also be fired in a ceramic kiln. This is the only way to ensure your piece is food safe and waterproof. Do not paint or seal your piece before firing as this will not be allowed in the kiln. Leave to air dry slowly for at least two weeks then take to your local studio for a bisque and glaze firing, make sure to discuss with them our clay’s specific firing speeds and temperatures.

  • What are the firing temperatures?

Bisque between 950ºC -1000°C on slow ramp with a 50ºC increase per hour up to 700ºC. Glaze up to Cone 6 1200°C for Earth Brown & Cone 10 1300°C for Sorrento Sand.

  • How do I air dry?

Let your piece dry slowly, inside and out of direct sunlight. Do not bake in the oven or try to speed up the drying process by using heat or direct sunlight as this will cause your creation to crack.

  • How long does it take to air dry?

Air-drying takes 24-72 hours depending on the size and thickness of your creation.

  • Do I have to knead the clay?

No need to knead, our clay is ready to use.

  • How long does the clay last?

Use your clay within 3 months. Make sure you reseal your bag after opening to prevent it drying out.

  • What do I do if some cracks appear?

Don't panic, as clay dries moisture evaporates out causing it to shrink and sometimes crack, especially if you use too much water in the creation stage. To fix the crack, firstly let your clay dry out completely. Once dry, create a slurry by mixing a small amount of clay and water 4:1 until it becomes a paste-like consistency. Apply this into and over the cracks, apply pressure to bind and smooth to finish. Allow creation to again dry completely.

  • What do I do with off cuts?

Keep all off cuts in an airtight container and store in a cool place until ready to use again. When ready, break into small 1cm pieces, wrap in a damp cloth and seal inside an old plastic bag or zip lock. Leave for a couple of days, until clay has absorbed moisture and is ready to knead and use again.

  • Do I have to paint?

No. If you want a raw and natural look, don’t paint, just seal and hero the clay in its natural colour.

  • Do I have to seal it?

Yes. All air dry clays are water based so must be sealed after drying to be resistant to moisture exposure and ensure you creation lasts.

  • What paints can I use?

Acrylic paint only. Use the paint provided or mix your own.

  • Best way to clean tools/workspace?

Always work on your canvas and wipe up any excess dust with a wet cloth. Avoid putting clay down the sink, instead wash all tools in a bucket with warm soapy water and air dry wooden tools well. Your paintbrush will need to be cleaned immediately with warm soapy water after using paint and/or sealant. Wash your canvas mat in cold water between uses or simply air dry outside.

  • I didn't have time to finish project!

Creating shouldn't be rushed. If you can't finish in one session simply wrap your project lightly in a damp towel and cover with a plastic bag or large bowl to keep the moisture in and avoid it drying out. Continue within the next few days.

  • Is my creation waterproof?

No. Sealing your clay will make your piece water resistant, not waterproof, so make sure it does not come into contact with water. If you want to create something waterproof you must fire it.

  • Is my creation food safe?

No. You cannot eat or drink from your creation. Air drying means decorative purposes only i.e. a plate to hold your jewellery rather than a plate to eat from. If you want to create something food safe you must fire it.

  • Can I make a planter?

Yes. Although this clay is not waterproof the trick is to wrap the clay around the container that contains your plant instead. This way the plant container holds the moisture (make sure it doesn’t have holes) and your clay planter stays dry. We recommend using succulents that don’t require much watering.

  • Can I make a candle holder?

Yes. We love making candle holders but do not recommend making an enclosed tea light holder. Please be safe and always keep an eye on it, avoid burning for longer than 2 hours.

  • Is it safe to use with children and during pregnancy?

Yes. Our clay, paint and sealant are all non-toxic. Do not eat the clay and always supervise children during use
